Merchant category code guide

MCC Code for Online Retailers: Amazon & eBay

There is no single “online retailer” code. A merchant’s category can depend on the business and how the transaction is processed. The examples below reflect CheckMCC’s current US merchant directory and are not a guarantee for every card transaction.

Which MCC do online retailers use?

Check the merchant record rather than assuming that every website uses the same code. In the current CheckMCC directory, Amazon and eBay are listed as MCC 5999, “Miscellaneous and Specialty Retail Stores.”

These are examples from the directory. A wallet, marketplace, subscription, or processor may use a different MCC for a particular payment path.

Why an online-shopping bonus may not apply

  • Card issuers define bonus categories in their own terms; a website purchase is not automatically an online-shopping bonus.
  • Subscriptions and digital services can have a different merchant category from retail goods.
  • Wallets and intermediaries may appear on your statement instead of the retailer.
  • Check the transaction’s posted MCC and the card’s current terms before relying on a bonus.
